State Police are still working to determine exactly what caused a tragic chain reaction crash in Jefferson County. Six people in all were killed in the Antwerp crash, five of them from the same family. Our Brian Dwyer explains what happened.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Six people were killed Thursday in a chain reaction crash in Jefferson County. It happened just after 9 a.m. Thursday in Antwerp on Route 11 near Dickson Road.

State Police say six vehicles were involved, including a tractor trailer and a DOT truck.

Police say the driver of the tractor trailer hit stopped traffic in a construction zone, causing a chain reaction crash. The car at the front of the line was carrying a family of five and burst into flames. Everyone in the car was killed.

A sixth person, a woman in another car, was taken to EJ Noble Hospital and pronounced dead.

"So, this was one unbelievable tragedy. Now, one family has to live with five that were killed instantly. So we're going to try to determined exactly what's the cause here, but it's going to take some time,” New York State Trooper Jack Keller said.

Police say the DOT driver, Lewis Lottie Jr., 44, was flown to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and is in critical condition.

Police tell us the tractor trailer is from a company called MBM out of North Carolina. The driver's name is James Mills. They say he was carrying a load of yogurt from North Lawrence.

We have a call out to the trucking company involved in the crash.

The five people in the same car who were killed were Laurie M. Dana, 42, who was driving, Catelyn Dana, 14, Lauren Dana, 11, Janet Dana, 69, and Shannon Planty, 14.

The woman in the other car, Maryann Gregory, 59, was also killed.
