MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Election Day could mean a shake-up in the Mohawk Valley. Political newcomer Levi Spires is taking on longtime incumbent Bill Magee for the 121st Assembly seat.
Spires has a background in internet marketing. The Republican candidate says he wants to stop population loss and shrink government to encourage businesses to set up shop here.
Democrat Magee has represented the district for 22 years. He says that experience will help him face challenges ahead, like continuing to fill budget deficits without raising taxes.
"We had major multibillion dollar deficits that we filled without raising taxes or creating new taxes. We don't need new taxes, we need to cut our taxes back and do whatever we can to encourage businesses to stay in New York and expand in New York," said Assemblyman Magee.
"I think the idea of government picking winners and losers, some businesses getting tax breaks, what ends up happening is the other businesses that don't get that tax break have to pay a higher rate of taxes relative to everyone else here in the region. I think if we simplify the tax code, it would actually encourage businesses to stay," said Spires.
The 121st district includes all of Madison County and part of Oneida and Otsego counties.
