VESTAL, N.Y. -- A large portion of Binghamton University's population hails from the New York/New Jersey area, so when Sandy rolled through last week, it hit particularly close to home for many on campus.

"Their house was just swept away out to sea. One relative in particular, he was four hundred yards from the ocean and he went back and there was nothing left," said Nick Agostino, BU senior.

It's stories like this from BU senior Nick Agostino that got the ball rolling on a collection drive at Binghamton University.

"It's really exploded. We've sent three cars home already and we have four coming up this weekend and we don't even know if that's going to be enough," said BU junior Dana Borrero.

Boxes of food, cases of water and bags of clothing clutter the lobby of the University Plaza leasing office in Vestal, but there are still many items students are looking to send downstate.

"We're collecting baby items, blankets, bottles, formula, winter jackets for all ages," said Agostino.

Many of the donations have come from those in the community who know all too well what it's like to be in a similar situation to those suffering.

"We've been down here every night sorting through this stuff for two to three hours. We even have stuff in our rooms because we don't know where to put it,and they come in and they donate and even the people that have talked to us say 'we went through it, we know what they're going through," Borero said.

Borrero say four more cars are making trips downstate this weekend. That's when the drive was originally supposed to end, but the response has been so tremendous, they're extending at least until the week of Thanksgiving when they themselves will return home for a few days.
