There was a touch of Hollywood inside an Armory Square landmark. Kitty Hoynes was featured on the Food Network show, 'Diners, Drive Ins and Dives' Monday night. The owners and staff rolled out the red carpet for guests to screen the episode. Our Iris St. Meran spoke to them about their national TV debut.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Monday nights at Kitty Hoynes are usually reserved for trivia. This week is different. It's a packed house for a special occasion.
"We still cannot believe it in a short period of time here we are on the Food Network," said owner David Hoyne.
The pub was featured on 'Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.' Hoyne got the call over the summer and host Guy Fieri and his crew filmed a short time later when they were in town. Chef Damien Brownlow cooked up some of their unique menu items for the host, serving Reuben fritters, Irish meat loaf and lamb burgers. The latter is a favorite of one regular.
"It takes away from the stereotypical burger. It's big; you can use two hands to have to eat the thing. It's just tender juicy and full of flavor," said regular Chris Malone.
The restaurant has already seen the show's impact before Monday's premiere. There's a mobile app that lists all the places Guy Fieri has visited, so people from different places even Canada have already stopped by.
Hoyne said, "It has a big following. We will expect to see lots of different people. We have already seen different people come."
They're looking forward to the added exposure this will bring, but are thankful for regulars like Steve Locey, who was actually interviewed for the episode.
"The friendly atmosphere is number one and the quality of food,” Locey said, “The food's always great, so you always have a great time here, you always get a good meal and the pints are always cold."
That’s a winning combination for a Syracuse staple that took the national stage for one night.
This episode was shot during the summer. Other nearby restaurants were also filmed and will be aired at a later date.
