Broome Community College could soon have a new addition. The college is making progress on its plan to build dorms on the campus. And as our Melissa Kakareka tells us, they are the latest of many community colleges to make the push for residential life.
TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y.- Some Broome Community College students will soon be doing more than taking classes on campus. They will have the option of living there.
Local and County officials toured the site of the school's proposed dorms on the east side of campus Monday. The dorms will help the school recruit athletes and attract out-of-town students.
"People assume that BCC is local, students locally, but what they don't understand is that there is so many students from out of state and international students as well," said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.
The building will be four stories and will contain about 80 apartment style rooms for approximately 300 students. The school will forward on the design portion in the coming weeks and will then look for funding. It will be bonded through the BCC Foundation.
"The challenge today is the financial environment that we are in. Prior to 2008 it was easier to get favorable financing," said BCC President Kevin Drumm.
BCC isn't alone in its plan. Two-thirds of community colleges in the SUNY system have dorms, including OCC and TC3.
"It's a growing trend across the nation. I'm a community college graduate and like most students I commuted. The national figures are something like 40 percent now have dorms. It growing and will grow when we add ours," said Drumm.
For BCC students, the idea of living on campus is something to look forward to.
"It would give it more of a like a campus life feel to it than it does now," said BCC student Colin Flak.
"I saw the new dorms they did for BU so if it's half of what those are like it's something I would consider greatly," said BCC student Dylan Brandon.
If everything goes according to plan, the college is hoping to break ground in the spring and have the dorms completed by summer 2014.
There is also the possibility of an additional phase to build more dorms after that.
