UTICA, N.Y. -- A new partnership between the Adirondack Railroad and Iowa Pacific Holdings has many people in Mohawk Valley excited for what's to come.

The two companies are planning to work together to rejuvenate a rail line running from New York City to Lake Placid, traveling directly through Utica.

A summit was held Tuesday night to discuss how this opportunity will affect the economy and tourism in Utica.

Some advocates say this rail line will attract people from around the world. Others disagree, saying a recreational trail is a better alternative.

Gene Falvo of the Adirondack Railway Preservation Society said, "This makes Utica a jumping off point for one of the best train ventures in the continental United States. We will rival the Grand Canyon or the Alaskan Railroad with our trip through the most pristine parts of the Adirondack Park."

Jim McCulley of the Adirondack Rail Trail said, "We feel it's a much greater economic impact. You're talking about in the summer time an estimated impact of about $20 million and snowmobiling you're looking at another $30 million."

Iowa Pacific Holdings will offer a high class trip on Pullman Sleeping Cars from New York City to the Adirondacks.

The Adirondack Railroad will use the rail to transport visitors to numerous locations across the state. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
