ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- It was a popular choice. The Town of Onondaga voted to instate a ban on hydrofracking Monday night.

Board members were unanimous in their decision after hearing from the community for the past 30 days.

One of the groups pushing for the ban was the Otisco Lake Preservation Association. They say it's been a two to three year process to protect their water source from the possibility of contamination.

"When you're looking at five towns and a lake that supplies over 340,000 customers with their water. You know, it's a real issue not only for withdrawal of fresh water that they would use and contaminating drinking water," said Anita Williams, President of Otisco Lake Preservation Association.

In the proposed hydrofracking regulations released by Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Syracuse watershed is specifically exempted from any drilling. The Town of Onondaga is in that watershed area. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
