BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- New York State wasted no time passing new gun control legislation and those in the Southern Tier are familiar with gun violence after the shooting at the American Civic Association.

Even so, local lawmakers Donna Lupardo, Clifford Crouch and Tom Libous all voted no.

In a written statement, Senator Libous said, "While parts of the bill make sense, other parts violate our Constitutional rights and limit individuals from protecting themselves and their families."

On the other side of the aisle, Democrat Lupardo said her vote was not against further gun control. Instead, she says the bill had many portions that needed further discussion before being written into law, especially the mental health components.

"This vote that I took wasn't a vote that was in favor necessarily of letting things go in the status quo. It was making sure that we get it right and that we can defend what we are doing and that mental health officials are comfortable with the steps we are taking," said Lupardo.

The Assemblywoman says mental health professionals have told her they're fearful that the bill may prevent people from seeking needed mental health care if their doctor could report them to the state.
