Strong winds have been pounding most of our viewing area all Thursday long and Oswego County is bracing for the worst, with heavy snow expected for Thursday night. Our Candace Hopkins has more from Oswego.
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego experienced very high winds and waves were crashing over the break wall. Some of these gusts have been up to 60 miles per hour and at times, it is simply hard to stand up.
It may look bad now, but we're told the worst of the weather is actually on the way. A lake effect band of snow is headed this way. We're told that at times it will be very heavy.
The band of snow was hovering over the Jefferson and Oswego County line Thursday afternoon, but when it does arrive in the Oswego area later Thursday, some areas will receive over a foot or more of snow. Obviously this area is no stranger to wind and snow, but the YNN weather team says these conditions could be blizzard-like conditions at the height of the storm and that's why county officials are saying if you don't have anywhere you have to be tonight, don't go out.
"High winds are very hard to drive in. If you have to go out, be very careful and know what the weather is not only where you are, but also where you are going, because certainly conditions from one side of the county to the other can change, especially when you’re talking lake effect snow,” said Oswego County Emergency Management Acting Director Terry Bennett.
A lake effect snow warning is in effect through Friday at 6 p.m.
