Even before the snow started to fall, word was already out about flight delays and cancellations. Our Bill Carey has more on what travelers have been dealing with, both in the air and on the ground.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Snow is nothing new at Hancock Airport. It is something the crews here know how to deal with and it rarely has an impact on takeoffs and landings.
But, in what has become a familiar wintertime pattern, it is weather problems at other airports that end up disrupting schedules in Syracuse.
As the storm bore down on the east coast, there were flights canceled to targeted cities like New York and Boston. But, other flights to other cities were scratched as well.
“They are, preemptively, canceling flights, so that they don't find themselves in situations where they have thousands of passengers stranded at airports across the Northeast, which I think is the right thing to do,” said Christina Callahan, Syracuse Aviation Commissioner.
Count Jeff and Carolyn Weldon of Watertown among the casualties of the storm. They are trying to get to sunny Sarasota, Florida.
“Well, our initial plans were to leave Syracuse at 6 a.m. Get up at 4, be to the airport by 6 and be in Sarasota by 2. And my phone beeped and Flight Aware contacted us and said. ‘Your flight has been canceled,’” said Jeffry Weldon.
They had the option of joining other travelers waiting out the storm here, but instead, were able to rent a car with a plan to drive to Elmira where flights are available first thing Saturday.
“We are traveling from Elmira to Detroit, Detroit to Atlanta and then Atlanta to Sarasota. And we'll be there tomorrow around 3:30,” said Carolyn Weldon.
And airlines weren't the only ones feeling the impact. Greyhound and Trailways were canceling bus runs to New York and Boston, although they planned to continue routes to the west.
AMTRAK did cutback its routes from New York to Boston, but has been continuing its service along the Empire Corridor.
