An accident after dark at the Salmon River Falls is now under investigation. One teenager was killed and another injured in a fall. YNN's Candace Hopkins has been following the story and has the latest.

ORWELL, N.Y. -- Police have identified the 19-year-old that fell over Salmon River Falls and was killed Wednesday night. They say Michael Peters, 19 of Parish, ignored signs warning of danger and climbed over a fence to get a closer look at the falls. That's when he slipped off the overlook and fell 110 feet into the river below.

Peters' friend, Kelton Lewis, 17, of Pulaski, tried to help, but also fell into the falls.

Officials say there's a reason the area is off limits at night.

"There is no artificial lighting that's out there. The markings are there, but of course, it's much more difficult to see. When you get yourself into a situation, often times those people find themselves alone, there's no one around. There's no one around to hear your calls for help," said Oswego County Undersheriff Eugene Sullivan.

Lewis was able to pull himself out and was transported to Upstate University Hospital. He is expected to be okay.

Divers found Peters' body at the base of the falls and pronounced him dead at the scene. They are still investigating his exact cause of death.
